Re: "Malay Lexicalized Items in Penang Peranakan Hokkien"

Thanks for raising awareness of this article Amhoanna. I have found it very useful for many indications of words that people use and know, although I find it a pity that the phonetic realisations of the Malay loans are not noted, as there seems to be no rule on what tones a Malay word will take on w...

Re: Bagan Hokkien 峇眼亞比个福建(同安)話

Yes, I've seen it, and it's very cool. I particularly like the nice script you developed for it. I hope some time you could start to write a dictionary of Bagan Hokkien with example sentences (although perhaps in POJ rather than the script you invented, unless you can make a font for it and I can le...

Re: Penang Hokkien lessons

Ok, so this is a direct quote from the infallible Pope of Penang Hokkien himself. For me, the only subject in English in school is English. The rest is in Bahasa Malaysia. Yet I think in English. I am training myself to get used to thinking in Penang Hokkien now, and am able to do translations from ...

Re: tamoe's needs help for hokkien translation thread

Sorry Tamoe, I didn't look at the forum for a while. I can try and say these in Northern Malaysian/Penang/Kedah Hokkien. I am not a native speaker, but I've thought about some of these things for years. You can search for a lot about Penang Hokkien grammar in this forum, and find some of the most re...

Re: Medhurst, Si̍p-ngó͘ Im and Chiang-chiu Phonology

Amhoanna, I have been thinking similar thoughts about the action verbs. I have been leaving them as squares for the time being rather than using the Mandarin ones like 揣 for chhōe get on my nerves. Then again I don't mind reading all kinds of Hokkien character choices, as long as I can read the text...

Re: Penang Hokkien lessons

A lot of reading material has been added to the site recently, and I feel it is time to warn prospective learners that it is not the amazing treasure trove of teaching materials it purports to be. Unfortunately it appears that the more reading material and sample sentence added to this site, the les...

Re: Malaysian Hokkien Occupation Words

This makes a lot of sense. and it is also the sort of thing that gets missed when people are explaining how to say things in Hokkien. recently I came across "chi-le si ichit-hang e kheh-lang e chiah" (= This is a kind of Hakka food) in a site purporting to teach a kind of Hokkien (I'll let...
